How many migrant workers have you met today? That security guard, the construction worker, your neighbour two doors down, maybe even someone from the office?

Now, how many of them have you spoken to? Have had a genuine conversation with? We understand that it can be daunting to strike up conversations with strangers, even if you want to get to know them, even if just to offer a kind word. How many wonderful life stories are you missing out on?

Everything you want is on the other side of fear.

Oftentimes, we find that people are misunderstood when two worlds of people don’t have the chance to simply just, talk. That is also the reason why we decided to launch Migrant Stories.

Every migrant we meet is someone who has traveled to where they are for greener pastures, and for reasons larger than themselves, for that alone, they are ones with lessons that we can learn from.

Migrant Stories is a platform where the public gets an opportunity to have one-to-one conversations with migrant workers who are willing to share their stories. What better way than human interaction to challenge our own perceptions?

We did our first one at RIUH’s Raya-themed event @ Sentul Depot recently, and it was a hit! We received an overwhelmingly positive response from the crowd who came from all over the world— Malaysia, Ireland, Seychelles, Maldives, and more.

We managed to host a total of 80 listeners —some individually, some in groups of four when space permitted— and they found the Migrant Stories installation to be effective in understanding migrant workers, and all of them wished for more of similar projects to take place.

“Great opportunity to learn about migrant worker from their own mouth. Keep this up! Let people know more about migrant workers.” — CHUAH

We had a full house of listeners on our last night at Riuh Raya ’19.

We are encouraged by all the responses and plan to do more of these storytelling sessions in the future!
